UPDATE : October 2014
With the launch of Provident Fund account portability, it is now possible to link all your previous EPF accounts with your current account. The EPF Department is now issuing a Universal Account Number (UAN) which will link all your previous EPF accounts opened by your previous employers. It is just like a customer id allotted by the bank to its customers where all the bank accounts are linked to this customer id. However, it is important to know that whether you have been issued with the UAN number of not. It is issued by the EPF Department and provided to your current employer, who is turn will provide you the same.
You may check the status of your UAN issuance online on the EPF site with the help of your current EPF account number. UAN one issued need to be activated long with generation of your user id and password. The process of UAN activation is very simple and most importantly online. So no need to run from pillar to post to get the same.
One your user id and and password is activated, you may view your passbook, account details, nomination etc.
It is important to note that for each step, a security key will be sent on your mobile number. So whenever, you are registering your UAN or user id, keep your mobile phone with you. While registration itself, it will ask for mobile number and all security key will be sent on the same number.
With this development, the dependency on employer for the withdrawal of EPF amount gets eliminated. Moreover, the linking of Provident fund accounts opened with previous employers becomes very easy. This also eases the process of transfer of previous account balance to newer accounts.
Our experience with this facility is very good. The system is fast and efficient. The SMS is received immediately while registration and system never hanged in the process, So, in all a right step implemented successfully in the benefit of all employees.
